Heard the expression, “actions speak louder than words?” Well we believe that your energy speaks even louder than your actions. So what is energy? Energy is your life force. Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence, refers to energy as the silent force that “emanates not only from the mind and physical form but from your heart, which conveys moment by moment the truth about who you really are, deep down, and what you stand for, care about and believe.”

We typically don’t use the word “energy” to describe people but we do say things like “she’s a force to be reckoned with,” or “I feel uplifted and energized when he comes in the room,” or “he seems distant and remote.” These are all descriptions of energetic states and often the descriptions used are ones that describe how we are impacted by someone… often at the unconscious level.

Energy is picked up non-verbally and it is operating all the time. When impacted by another’s energy, in a split second, we interpret (make assumptions and judgments about the other), react (often experience a feeling about the it) and then respond often before we give ourselves time to think about what would be an appropriate response.

To be effective in working with others, we need to be aware of the energy we bring to interactions with others. Without a level of awareness of our energy, we may be sabotaging ourselves even before we open our mouths. Remember it’s not only what you say or do, it’s how you show up!
