“Challenge is the core and the mainspring of all human activity. If there’s an ocean, we cross it; if there’s a disease, we cure it; if there’s a wrong, we right it; if there’s a record, we break it; and finally, if there’s a mountain, we climb it.”
~James Ramesy Ullman
Our work with the Enneagram over the years has taught us that we, human beings, don’t always see a situation, issue or interaction the same way. This is due to the fact that we each have a particular lens that we see the world through and that causes us to interpret life’s events differently than others might. The Enneagram describes nine distinctly different lenses that influence how individuals not only see the world but how they think, feel and act at any given moment.
So do you see challenges or opportunities? Do you thrive in dealing with challenges or do you build your life to avoid encountering them? Do you think people who always talk about opportunities, not challenges, are “pie-in-the-sky” dreamers or do you wish you could see more opportunities rather than challenges? Do you only see opportunities and avoid facingchallenges head on?
The point here is not what we think or how we would answer these questions but how you define, handle and manage opportunities and challenges in your life. Your lens dictates your thoughts, reactions, actions and results.
Dare to see challenges as they are and face them.
Dare to see opportunities when challenges arise.
Climb a mountain with both in view and you’ll always reach the top!
