Last week we said “Hello” to a brand new season with the official arrival of the Spring Equinox on March 20th. If change and transformation inspire you, there’s really no other season like Spring for connecting us to feeling genuinely optimistic and delivering a sense of renewal. Oftentimes there’s literally even a buzz in the air!

What’s creating buzz for you this season, and have you taken time to celebrate it? Did you know when you make it a priority to gather and celebrate important milestones with your family, friends, and team members — or, yes, even random strangers at outdoor festivals — you are addressing and achieving important components for your wellbeing?

In their book Wellbeing, Tom Rath and Jim Harter explore five essential elements that shape our lives — career, social, financial, physical and community wellbeing. According to Rath and Harter, workplace celebrations help us come together and leave the day-to-day “noise” of our deadlines, meetings and email behind. Celebrating with coworkers helps to create opportunities to be fully present with one another in the moment and can also result in higher levels of engagement within work groups.

Workplace celebrations don’t just happen on their own. So, step up, set your intention, and launch a plan for your team to celebrate a quirky, fun “just because” holiday. Or perhaps an afternoon off-site, held out of the office at a local park playing volleyball, might be another great way to help build a more cohesive team. Choose the type of event that reflects your organizational culture and turn “some day” into an April Fun Day to demonstrate you recognize the value of celebrating and connecting with your team.
