“What’s your purpose?”
“Are you happy?”
“What’s most important to you?”
If you are like me, you have been asked these three questions or have asked them of yourself at some point in your life.
While these are questions that lead you to do some self-reflection, I wonder if you’ve ever felt it difficult to answer these questions. I had about 12 hours on airplanes last week, and I got to thinking about these questions. They seem to imply that we “should” know our purpose; we “should” be happy and when we’re not, something’s wrong with us; and we “should” know what’s important to us even though it changes over time. Somehow these questions make us feel “less than” or not complete or “together” enough.
Asking questions about our life is a good thing, so I’m not suggesting we stop asking questions. I am suggesting, however, that we ask better questions that help us grow, develop and live a rich, satisfying and meaningful life. What if you asked these questions instead?
What in your life inspires or excites you? How can you do more of those things?
What moments and situations fill you with deep satisfaction and happiness? How can you create more of them?
If there was one thing in your life that you couldn’t live without, what would that be? Why? What are you willing to do to make sure that one thing stays a priority in your life?
Now those are questions I can answer. How about you?
This week be mindful of the questions you ask yourself, your prospects, clients, employees, and team members. See if you can re-frame them to get at the “real” issues that matter! Share your questions on our Facebook page. We’d love to hear from you.
